CHIN AUGMENTATION Posted in: Most Frequent Procedures

It is important that you read and re-read this page before you consider undergoing this surgery.

This surgery is indicated in patients whose chin is underdeveloped. The nose or lips  are the dominant feature of the face detracting from the overall aesthetics. A chin implant provides facial balance.

This surgery is relatively quick and painless and when done alone, can be done in the office, provided that the patient is a good candidate for local anesthesia. The surgery is performed through a 3 cm transverse incision in the sub-mental fold (under the chin). The resulting scar is very inconspicuous in the majority of people. When increasing the chin for aesthetic reasons as a stand-alone procedure the operating time is approximately 30 minutes.

If the patient is afraid, unwilling to undergo surgery under local anesthesia or considering combining this surgery with other surgery requiring general anesthesia, it will be done in the hospital. The period of hospitalization and recovery will be dictated by the operation that requires the most time in order to provide for your safety and comfort.

Other procedures that can be combined with this surgery include:  nose surgery, liposculpture (reducing the amount of fat in the neck, or the famous “double chin”),  prominent ear correction and eyelid enhancement. Feel free to ask about the possibility of these other surgeries during your initial consultation.

Below arevsome important pointers for “before and after” chin augmentation:

BEFORE SURGERY:
1. Do not take aspirin or aspirin products for 2 to 3 weeks prior to surgery. (Click Non recommended Medicines for more information.)
2.  For three consecutive nights before surgery wash the entire face with Isodine foam (Betadine in the US) shampoo. Your pharmacist may suggest an alternative product if you are unable to find it.
4. Do not eat  food for 8 hours before your operation.
5. For your own convenience, bring loose comfortable clothes with zippers or buttons.

AFTER SURGERY:
1. Go directly home and remain at rest for 24 to 48 hours.
2. You may get up to use the toilet and for meals only during this period.
3. The first day at home you should take sips of fluids, gradually increasing to a soft diet. If you do not have nausea, you can eat normally.
4. Avoid eating hard foods like nachos, tostadas, etc. for about 10 days.
5. Avoid smoking.
6. You may brush you teeth as per usual but do so gently.
7. An oral examination will be done on the 4th day after surgery.
